Patricia Riggen (Director)
PATRICIA RIGGEN (Director) is today one of the few Latin-American female directors working in Hollywood. Originally from Mexico, she started her career as a screenwriter, producer and film executive at the Mexican Film Institute. She later moved to New York to do an MFA in directing and screenwriting at Columbia University.
Her thesis film, The Cornfield, a period short film set during the Mexican revolution, screened in over 30 international film festivals and received 20 awards; among them the Student Academy Award, the Mexican Academy Award for Best Short Film, the Student Emmy and DGA Awards.
Her next film, the 30 minute documentary film Family Portrait, a story about poverty in Harlem, featuring Gordon Parks, won the Jury Award for Best Short Film at the Sundance Film Festival 2005.
Patricia directed and produced her first feature film Under the Same Moon. It premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival to accolades and was quickly acquired for worldwide distribution by Fox Searchlight and The Weinstein Company. It was released theatrically in March 2008 to opening-weekend record numbers for a Spanish language film in the US and became a box office success in both Mexico and the U.S.
Patricia directed two features for the young audiences, Girl in Progress, a coming-of-age comedy starring Eva Mendes, Patricia Arquette and Cierra Ramirez, and the musical Lemonade Mouth for the Disney Channel, which received a DGA nomination and garnered 12.5 million viewers in its first two airings.
Most recently Patricia directed the English language Chilean mining drama The 33. The film is based on the real events of the 2010 disaster in which a group of 33 miners were trapped in the San José Mine, in Chile for 69 days. With leading star Antonio Banderas and actor ensemble Juliette Binoche, Gabriel Byrne, Rodrigo Santoro and Lou Diamond Phillips, the film will be released by Warner Brothers in the fall of 2015.
Patricia is currently directing the Sony Pictures drama Miracles from Heaven, for producers Joe Roth, TD Jakes, and Devon Franklin, starring Jennifer Garner and Queen Latifah. It is scheduled for a Spring 2016 release.
